There is a chair in the middle of an empty room.

It is not a special chair. It does not glow. It has no history anyone can prove. If you sit in it, nothing visible happens. The walls remain walls. The air remains air. Time does not pause out of respect.

And yet the chair has a reputation.

People say that if you sit there long enough, all the things demanding to matter begin to lose their voices. The urgent becomes merely loud. The loud becomes distant. The distant becomes almost funny. After a while, you can hear smaller things returning from exile: the scrape of a sleeve, the hum behind the lights, the fact that your hands have always belonged to you and never once asked for applause.

Some leave the chair disappointed. They wanted revelation, or a sign, or at least a sentence that could survive being printed on a poster.

But a few stand up differently than they sat down.

Not wiser. Not transformed. Just less crowded.

Maybe that is all peace ever was:
not the arrival of something grand,
but the departure of everything unnecessary.
