The wind carried a single yellow leaf across the empty courtyard, spinning it like a tiny, hesitant dancer before it settled into the crack of a paving stone. Somewhere, a clock struck noon, but no one was there to hear it. The sky was a pale, uninterested blue, and the sun—though present—felt more like a polite guest than a host.
A squirrel darted past, paused, and looked back as if to say, "You’re sure this is where you want to be?"
The bench in the center of the square was pristine, as if no one had ever sat on it. A discarded coffee cup lay on its side, its contents long evaporated. A fly buzzed lazily, circling the cup in a slow, indifferent orbit.
